Mouth is considered as the mirror of the general health of human body. Oral hygiene habits are developed and established in early childhood and aid in the prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease in the future.

It is mentioned in the Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana 5, 78-80) where it is called Kavala Gandoosha/Kavala Graha and is claimed to cure about 30 systemic diseases ranging from headache and migraine to diabetes and asthma. Organic oils such as sunflower oil, sesame oil, and coconut oil are of benefit.
During oil pulling, a tablespoon of sesame or coconut oil is given in the mouth and is pulled between the teeth for 10 to 15 minutes. The oil gets emulsified and surface area of the oil gets increased. The process of emulsification of oil begins upon 5 min of oil pulling. The viscous oil turns thin and milky white. This oil generates antioxidants which damage the cell wall of microorganisms and kill them. The oil should not be swallowed as it contains bacteria and toxins. Oil pulling therapy should be followed by brushing the teeth and is preferably done on an empty stomach in the morning.
Coconut oil has high saponification index. It contains lauric acid which has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory properties, prevents dental caries and is beneficial to oral health. In addition to this it also has a pleasant taste.
